Good MorningMay got off to a quiet start on Monday with the major indices mostly flat at the end of the session after trading within very tight ranges. The S&P 500 advanced about a half percent to close just shy of setting a new all-time high while the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite gave up more than a quarter percent. The Dow Jones Transportation bucked the trend, however, to gain more than 2.0% as it moved deeper into the new all-time high territory.
The attention this week will be on earnings and data, not only are there over 130 S&P 500 companies scheduled to report but there is also the April non-farm payroll report to worry about. The consensus estimate is for 1 million new jobs to have been created in April and the figure could be much higher. The risk for the market is that job creation could indeed be much higher than expected and lead the way to rising inflation and fear of higher rates.
