Good MorningEquity markets rebounded on Wednesday, closing near the week's open after the CPI report came in as expected. As expected, inflation remains sticky, with headline consumer prices accelerating compared to the previous month and the core reading flat and at levels well above the Fed's target.
In this scenario, one of the Fed's mandates is covered - the labor market - and the other needs attention. This means the Fed may pause its rate-cutting cycle next week, contrary to the market's belief. The CME FedWatch Tool is pricing a nearly 100% chance for a 25 basis point rate cut.
Thursday's hurdle is the PPI index. The PPI is a leading indicator of inflation and will give a clue as to what to expect from the CPI next month. If it comes in hotter than expected, it could reinvigorate fear of the Fed and what higher-for-longer interest rates will do for the economy. Even if the FOMC cuts next week, it is highly unlikely that rates will be reduced further in 2025 without improvement in the data.
